MurMur

MurMur is a modular marble track designed to enhance sensory perception by encouraging users to rely on their sense of hearing and touch.

Tasked with creating a marble track from at least three fundamental modules that could be combined in various ways, this design represents a complete interactive experience. The track is meant to be held in the hands and can be manipulated in all directions to guide the marble.

Features:

  • Modular Design: Each tube, compressed to a meter in length, can be built upon the base structure and connected using middle pieces, offering endless customizability.

  • Sensory Interaction: As the marble is invisible during its journey, users must locate it by the sound and vibrations it emits, rotating the track until the marble emerges at the starting point.

  • Acoustic Dynamics: The angle of the run and the surface of the tube, which varies with the degree of compression, alters the marble's sound. The more the tube is stretched, the louder the sound.

  • Material and Construction: The base is made from beechwood, a lightweight material, stained dark, and its form is inspired by Czech hedgehogs – simple anti-tank obstacles that could be easily constructed from steel.

  • Marble Variety: Marbles made from glass, stainless steel, cork, and wood each produce a unique sound when rolling through the tubes, adding layers of complexity and serving as difficulty levels in the game.

  • Connectors: Aluminum connectors, 3D-printed for the prototype in silver Silk-PLA, seamlessly integrate into the tubes, mimicking their surface and serving as entry or exit points for the marbles.

  • Aluflexschlauch: An extendable and heat-resistant aluminum tube, originally developed for ventilation systems, can expand from 1 meter to 2.6 meters.

Design Philosophy:

This project intertwines functionality with a deep appreciation for the tactile and auditory sensations, offering a unique twist to the traditional marble run. It's a testament to design that goes beyond the visual, creating a playful yet profound sensory experience.
